The War Against Weeds is On at Pontiac, IL, Grow More Experience Site

The Pontiac, IL, Grow More™ Experience site demonstrates tools to win the battle against weeds like waterhemp and Palmer amaranth (pictured) species.

Many growers in central Illinois are battling increased weed pressure. This is also the case at the Pontiac, IL, Grow More™ Experience site. Weeds like waterhemp, Palmer amaranth, velvetleaf and morningglory are present in fields around the area. Although all weeds can cause a negative effect on crop yield, some weeds can cause more damage than others.

Tough weeds like waterhemp and Palmer amaranth have male and female weeds that cross-pollinate, creating interspecies with genetic diversity. This can lead to increased herbicide resistance. Resistant populations can spread rapidly, overtaking entire geographic areas and leaving a costly legacy if allowed to produce seed.

Both waterhemp and Palmer amaranth are prolific seed producers. One waterhemp plant can generate up to 500,000 seeds, and a Palmer amaranth plant can produce up to a million seeds.

We recommend you follow these agronomic practices to help control weed resistance and multiplication:

  • Start with clean fields, including borders.
  • Consider mechanical weed control.
  • Use cover crops to help keep existing weed populations at bay.
  • Use full herbicide rates, carrier and recommended adjuvant(s).
  • Scout fields, borders, fencerows and ditches early and often for weed pressure.
  • Rotate crops, which allows rotation of herbicide sites of action (SOAs).
  • Apply residual herbicides with multiple, effective SOAs.
  • Increase herbicide SOA diversity with premixes and tank mixes.

In corn, we recommend a 2-pass system of Acuron® (SOA Groups 5, 15 and 27) or Acuron® Flexi (SOA Groups 15 and 27) preemergence herbicide followed by the remaining rate post-emergence, or a preemergence application of Acuron or Acuron Flexi followed by Halex® GT (SOA Groups 9, 15 and 27) plus an atrazine brand post-emergence. Acuron gives you 5-15* more bushels an acre than any other herbicide and contains multiple SOAs for built-in resistance management and long-lasting residual control.

We also offer an effective weed management program in soybeans that starts with BroadAxe® XC herbicide (SOA Groups 14 and 15) or Boundary® 6.5 EC (SOA Groups 5 and 15) herbicide. These herbicides provide for preemergence weed control of waterhemp and Palmer amaranth with long-lasting residual and multiple SOAs. A post-emergence application of Flexstar® GT 3.5 (SOA Groups 9 and 14) delivers 2 different sites of action to control glyphosate and ALS resistance, Prefix (SOA Groups 14 and 15) herbicide along with the soybean trait herbicide will provide 3 different sites of action, or Tavium® Plus VaporGrip Technology (SOA Groups 5 and 15) herbicide delivering 2 different sites of action also.
