Protect Cotton from Weeds and Grasses in 2023

As a cotton grower, you know that having a powerful weed management plan in place throughout the season is crucial to the success of your yields. With unpredictable weather conditions and a growing list of herbicide-resistant weeds, it’s important to ensure you’re seeing the highest possible efficacy from your herbicide program all season long.
Take the time now to evaluate your previous herbicide programs and choose products that deliver broad-spectrum weed management and residual activity.
Herbicides with long-lasting residual control help maintain clean fields and avoid expensive resprays late in the season. By starting with a preemergence application of a herbicide with multiple effective sites of action and residual activity, then following it up with an overlapping postemergence product that provides the same, you have a stronger chance of seeing clean fields through harvest.
This consistent coverage not only helps reduce the yield loss that can result from unchecked weed competition but can also minimize the number of weed escapes you experience. This keeps deposits to your weed seed bank lower, a long-term benefit to your fields in the fight against herbicide resistance.
For the top performance in your fields, Tripp Walker, Syngenta agronomy service representative in MS, recommends the following program:
- Start the season with a burndown herbicide, such as Gramoxone® SL 3.0 herbicide, plus a residual herbicide, such as Caparol® 4L herbicide. With fast-acting results in as little as 48 hours, Gramoxone SL 3.0 delivers convenient, flexible and dependable burndown of emerged grass and broadleaf weeds. Caparol 4L provides foliar knockdown of emerged weeds and residual control of later-germinating weeds for even greater flexibility.
- Follow this up with an early postemergence application of Tavium® Plus VaporGrip® Technology herbicide to help reduce the weed seed bank, increase diversity within the herbicide program and help fight resistance. A combination of the contact control of dicamba and the residual control of S-metolachlor, Tavium is a convenient premix that manages key ALS-, PPO- and glyphosate-resistant broadleaf and grass weeds.
