Preventative Disease Management in Squash

August 11, 2017
This agronomic image shows the squash variety called Grandprize.

When diseases like powdery mildew strike cucurbit crops, they can reduce yields and plant quality. First appearing as pale yellow spots, powdery mildew slowly covers the surface of the plant while producing spores that give the surface a powdery white coating. The University of California offers a few tips for managing the disease.

Planting resistant varieties is a good way to help prevent powdery mildew infections. Resistance breeding is a priority for Syngenta, as evidenced with the introduction of new varieties like Grandprize squash and Spineless Supreme zucchini. Both varieties offer enhanced resistance packages to diseases like powdery mildew. Learn more about Syngenta squash varieties and disease resistances here.

During the season, carefully monitor fields to stay on top of any potential spores, and treat with a fungicide if powdery mildew symptoms appear.
