Performance When it Counts: Early-Season Weed Control in Corn

In the quest for a high-yielding corn crop, the early bird gets the worm. That’s because corn yield potential is at its highest the moment you plant your seed. After that, stresses like weed pressure, disease and drought reduce each plant’s potential. One of the biggest drivers of yield loss is early-season weed pressure, which makes early-season weed control (ESWC) a MUST.

Benefits of Good ESWC

  • Protects yield potential
    • Weeds present at corn emergence fundamentally alter the way corn plants grow as they compete for resources. These changes negatively impact yield potential and cannot be overcome even with post-emergence weed control.
  • Preserves nutrients and water
    • Weeds as little as 2-4″ can consume 13.4 lbs. of (N)itrogen, 0.85 lbs. of (P)hosphorus and 16.8 lbs. of Potassium (K). At current pricing, that’s roughly $24 per acre in lost fertilizer nutrients alone.1
    • In 3 days, 3-inch weeds can remove 1 inch of water from the soil.2
  • Saves time and money
    • Many weeds are prolific seed producers and, if given the chance, will deposit seeds into the weed seed bank, which will require additional time and money to manage in future seasons.

Weed Control You Can Trust

For powerful ESWC, we recommend Acuron® corn herbicide. Acuron contains 4 active ingredients, including the unique component bicyclopyrone, and 3 effective sites of action (Groups 5, 15 and 27) for unmatched burndown and residual control of 70+ grass and broadleaf weeds until crop canopy and beyond.

1Weed Nutrient Uptake Source: Approximately 20 Syngenta Learning Center Research locations between 2006-2008. Nutrients measured from samples taken from weeds 1-2” and 2-4” in height. Analysis completed by Midwest Labs, Omaha, NE. Period from weed emergence to removal at 1-2” in height was 10 days and 2-4” in height was 20 days. Calculations used 28% UAN as the nitrogen source; DAP-(18-46-0) as the phosphorus source and muriate of potash-(0-0-60) as the potash source.
