Help Fight Weed Resistance With Crop Rotation

Managing weeds can be a challenge every year, especially in the South where herbicide-resistant weeds are well established. So how can you take preventative measures to protect your crops from these tough weeds now and into the future?

In some fields in the Mid-South, only 1 crop – typically cotton – might’ve been grown on a farm for 20 or so years, due to the crop’s profitability. But with the shift from cotton to planting grains like corn in recent years, different herbicide chemistries like atrazine that could not be used on cotton can be introduced to provide variability in the fight against weeds. The better control over tough, yield-robbing weeds, the higher your yield potential at harvest.

Mississippi Agricultural Consultants Association points out that by using crop rotations, you can improve your potential yield as many weed, insect and disease problems build up when using the same management program repeatedly every year. Crop rotation disrupts the cycle and can help prevent problems before they occur. By using a corn crop rotation, the soil’s physical structure can recycle more organic matter than cotton or soybeans.

By taking advantage of growing corn, premium herbicides that cannot be used on cotton or soybeans have made a big impact on weed management.

So how can you treat tough weeds in your field? For your corn fields, we recommend Acuron® corn herbicide which outperforms and outyields all other corn herbicides. With 4 active ingredients, including atrazine, mesotrione and bicyclopyrone – which are only available for use in corn – Acuron provides season-long control to help fully protect your corn’s yield potential.

If you’re growing soybeans or cotton this year, we recommend an application of Tavium® Plus VaporGrip® Technology herbicide. A formulation of dicamba and S-metolachlor, Tavium is convenient for managing key ALS-, PPO- and glyphosate-resistant broadleaf and grass weeds.
