Growers Need Consistent Corn Weed Management Tools

Many growers in KS and NE already face resistance to at least 1 herbicide, so they understand the importance of residual control and using multiple sites of action to manage tough weeds.

A trial at our York, NE, Grow More Experience site compared some of the most common resistance management-focused corn herbicide programs. We tested Acuron® plus AAtrex® 4L herbicides applied preemergence against 2 different 2-pass herbicide programs:

  • Degree Xtra® followed by Harness® MAX plus Roundup PowerMAX® herbicides.
  • Zidua® SC plus Sharpen® plus AAtrex 4L followed by Status® plus Roundup PowerMAX herbicides.

The video below shows the competitive 2-pass programs failed to achieve optimal weed management, while the rows treated preemergence with Acuron were almost completely clean.

In addition to providing less effective weed management, these 2-pass programs are also inconvenient options that require tank-mixing several products together. In the case of the Zidua pre-program, 5 different herbicide products (Zidua SC, Sharpen, AAtrex 4L, Status and Roundup PowerMAX) had to be used throughout the season. Tank-mixing so many products introduces risks around crop injury and herbicide effectiveness that can be avoided by using a more robust herbicide pre-mix.

Even after tank-mixing several herbicides, both 2-pass programs struggled to manage grass weeds. Acuron offers the most consistent and longest-lasting residual on the market, and was able to hold strong against the grass weeds that escaped the other herbicide treatments.

A full rate preemergence application of Acuron gives growers the best chance of managing tough weeds in a single pass. Bicyclopyrone, a component unique to Acuron, combines with other 3 active ingredients to provide consistent performance across geographies, soil types and environmental conditions. Improved management of yield-robbing weeds also enables Acuron to deliver 5-15 more bushels per acre than any other corn herbicide.*

Calculate what those extra bushels could mean for your revenue potential.
