Four Tips to Start Your Soybean Season Successfully

As the days get longer and the ground begins to soften, you’re likely getting prepared to start planting. Before breaking out the planter, consider which management practices are best to start your soybean fields off right:

  1. Plant timing: Soybeans are typically planted late April through early May. Reports state that soybeans planted in early May consistently produced higher yields than those planted later, but it’s crucial to check the recommended planting conditions for your area first.
  2. Soil Conditions: Experts recommend waiting for optimal soil temperatures and conditions. Planting when soils are too wet or too cold can reduce emergence and plant populations, leading to reduced yields.
  3. Weed Pressure: Many weed species have the ability to lay dormant over the winter. Be prepared with the right management strategies to protect soybeans from weeds from the start.
  4. Resistance: Plant varieties resistant to soybean cyst nematode (SCN) and tolerant to sudden death syndrome (SDS), especially when presence has been confirmed in a field. However, keep in mind that this alone is not enough to combat them. NK® agronomists also recommend applying a seed treatment with proven activity on these pests.

Talk with your local NK retailer about how to effectively manage your early season soybeans.
