Five Tips for Winter Wheat Planting Success

August 21, 2018
This agronomic image shows winter wheat.

Many factors affect the success of a winter wheat season, including weather and seed supply. Many growers planted wheat late last fall, and a dry winter followed. This and other factors like hail means seed supply is going to be tight this fall, so it’s important growers contact their suppliers as soon as possible to ensure adequate supply.

In addition to these insights, we will delve into 5 key tips for successful winter wheat planting this year:

  1. Choose varieties based on multi-year data for a more accurate assessment of performance.
  2. Invest in certified seed for high-quality germ.
  3. Use a seed treatment to help with early-stand establishment and manage early diseases.
  4. Use a starter fertilizer, especially for late-planted wheat to help generate tillers to overwinter.
  5. Calibrate planters to ensure good seed-to-soil contact.
