Effects of Weed Pressure in Mature Corn Seen at Pontiac, IL

August 29, 2019

Due to the decrease efficacy of the competitor product, there is increased weed pressure in the center rows of the trial pictured. These corn plants are significantly stunted, show signs of nitrogen deficiency from having to compete with weeds for water and nutrients, and will likely have decreased yield output.

The Pontiac, IL, Grow More™ Experience site hosts trials reflecting the local experiences of north-central IL corn growers and the pressures they face from tough weeks like waterhemp, Palmer amaranth, velvetleaf and morningglory. These weeds can cause significant crop stress, a reduction in yield, and if left to go to seed, can mingle with harvested grain, causing dockage at elevators.

In the trial below, we compared Syngenta products like Acuron® Flexi and Lexar® EZ corn herbicides to competitor products. The trial highlighted the difference in effectiveness and residual between preemergence herbicides and showed the importance of a key resistance management principle: start with a clean field. Not starting clean with an effective burndown paves the way for early-season competition from tough weeds.

It’s important to have a complete weed management plan that starts clean and provides residual through corn canopy. To start and stay clean throughout the season, we recommend a burndown application with Acuron® corn herbicide plus a crop oil concentrate or MSO as the burndown and residual herbicide component, or a burndown application (Gramoxone® SL 2.0 herbicide) with Acuron or Acuron Flexi corn herbicide. Acuron gives you 5-15* more bushels an acre than any other herbicide and contains multiple sites of action for built-in resistance management and long-lasting residual control.
