Careful Scouting Crucial for Insect Management in Alfalfa

June 13, 2017

Successful alfalfa production can be considerably hindered by various pest threats. As such, continuous monitoring and scouting are essential to effective insect management. Alfalfa growers in the Pacific Southwest need to have an insect management plan in place before pests reach damaging levels.

Pests to watch:

Be on the lookout in June for looper and armyworms. If populations are detected, consider early harvesting to prevent yield loss. If early harvesting is not an option, treat alfalfa with an insecticide.

Aphids can severely reduce yields and call for weekly monitoring. If aphids pose a threat to alfalfa, insecticides should be applied.

Besiege® insecticide provides consistent performance under a variety of conditions. With active ingredients chlorantraniliprole and lambda-cyhalothrin, Besiege provides fast knockdown and long-lasting control of a wide range of insect pests including weevils.
