BeSure! and Follow BMPs to Apply Foliar Crop Protection Products

As spring progresses and the 2020 growing season approaches, be sure to follow best management practices (BMPs) when applying foliar crop protection products. Agronomist Garrett Gilcrease provides more information:

Foliar application crop protection products are important pest-management tools that protect plants from harmful threats, which can lead to increased yields and boosted revenue. For these products to be used safely around pollinators and other wildlife, it’s critical they are properly stewarded and applied according to the label.

To help reduce potential pesticide exposure or harm to insect pollinators when using foliar applications, be sure to:

  • Strictly observe the application timing on the label relative to the blooming stage of the crop and other plants in the area.
  • Follow all pesticide label requirements regarding application conditions, such as wind speed, wind direction, temperature and relative humidity.
  • Establish appropriate buffers (no-spray zones) between treated areas and insect pollinator habitat or hives.
  • Cooperate and communicate with other farmers, landowners, applicators, beekeepers, crop advisors and local officials.
