    In potatoes, watch for escaped weeds

    PACIFIC NORTHWEST: I just returned from a trip to eastern Idaho, and potato harvest is in full swing. I couldn’t help but notice that some growers are struggling with some pesky weeds, particularly hairy nightshade. Budget cuts to spring herbicide programs can sometimes allow weeds to not only go to seed – causing problems in next year’s crop – but reduce harvest efficiency as well. Now is the time to take note of the weeds…
