Spinach Growers: Downy Mildew Got You Down?

You’re not alone. Downy mildew is the most damaging disease in spinach production almost everywhere spinach is grown. Because of the natural layered way spinach grows, and the added density of plants in most fields, conditions are ideal for this disease to spread rapidly. Therefore, it’s important to be proactive in management practices.

The pathogen that causes downy mildew, Peronospora farinosa f. sp. spinaciae, thrives in wet, cool conditions, making cultural controls such as reducing leaf wetness a key preventive approach. Additionally, using a fungicide like Orondis® Ultra, currently sold as a multi-pack product combining Orondis Ultra A and Orondis Ultra B, offers excellent control of downy mildew in spinach.
